about

When I first encountered the name and music of the Red Planet Orchestra in 2013, I didn't know who was behind it.

The name seemed fitting and unfitting at the same time: Yes, they were indeed extra-terrestrial, orchestral sounds, but they didn't seem to come from Mars, but from the depths of the soul.

Vince Rees & Pete Smith have gone through an amazing development since their first album “Aurora Symphony” (2013). From the epic, meandering and symphonic tracks, some of which last half an hour, to increasingly more precisely sketched emotional images and increasingly stronger forms of expression.

In this respect, “Where Summer Sleeps” is the high point of development so far: Recorded during the time of the lockdown, it has become a dark, desolate but never-ending shimmering work, whose opener “Crime Of Innocence” has, not least due to its frugal but effectively set vocals, a demanding hymn-like pop character. What follows are mood images painted with monochrome and pastel timbres, which allow associations with barren landscapes as well as with the dark sides of isolation.

The "Nordic Noir type feeling" that Vince Rees felt during the production of this masterpiece is transmitted directly to the listener, the multifaceted sound forms a self-contained unit that once again functions like an acoustic film.

In short: The highlight so far in the history of the Red Planet Orchestra, which is waiting to be discovered!
